This week, we’re kicking off a spooky new theme: Halloween favorites. To start it off, we have a guest recommendation from film writer Audrey Fox (@audonamission)!

Today’s movie: The Return of the Living Dead

What it’s about: A pair of warehouse employees find the remnants of a secret military experiment in the basement and accidentally release a gas that brings corpses back to life as zombies with a single-minded focus on eating brains.
Why it’s great: This movie is bananas — truly a wild ride! It has a lightness of touch that allows it to have fun with the zombies in a way that horror films playing it straight can't quite pull off. And while the human characters might not have much in the way of personality, the undead certainly do. These zombies can run, talk (although their conversation is generally limited to brain-related topics), and lay traps for unsuspecting paramedics. It establishes itself as unique from the Romero zombie films, and as much as it avoids taking itself too seriously, The Return of the Living Dead reflects societal mistrust of the government and fears over environmental issues in a way that gives it perhaps unintended layers.
