Halloween Favorites III: The Blob ☄️
In movie news: 'The Matrix 4' cast its lead and Pixar's newest movie
🌘 Happy Thursday!
Today we have a guest Halloween favorites recommendation from Next Best Picture contributor Josh Parham (@JRParham). Nothing like an 80s creature feature to snuggle up to on a cold October night.
Okay, here’s day 3️⃣.
Today’s movie: The Blob (1988)

What it’s about: On a quiet night in a small California town, a meteor crashes on earth carrying a sentient, amorphous mass. It also has a taste for living things, and as it ingests more and more of the townspeople, it grows even larger until it is a giant beast that appears unstoppable. An unlikely couple tries to survive the night while not becoming slowly digested by this horrendous menace.
Why it’s great: The original film from which this is based on is a not very good sci-fi/horror film from the 1950s. It has a silly premise and is weakly executed, but it endured in the culture. To take that foundation and turn it into something genuinely terrifying is a great accomplishment, and this remake does that. Utilizing excellent practical effects, it turns the creature into a nightmarish figure that engulfs its victims in a disturbing and graphic manner. The film gives its monster a real sense of menace, and nobody feels safe from it (even children). As a kid, this was one of the few films that genuinely scared me to my core, and even still gets me a bit to this day. It’s one of the most memorable and creative horror films from the era and deserves to be seen by more.
