Okay, hereās day two.
Today's movie //Ā Streaming on HuluWild Rose
Fresh out of prison and on house probation, aspiring country singer and young mom Rose (Jessie Buckley) tries to find a way out of her small Scottish town through stardom. [Trailer]

Why you should watch it: Wild Rose isnāt your typical small town girl with big dreams movie. It has an edge to it thanks to Jessie Buckleyās star-making performance and her characterās steely indignance. Sheās not exactly the charming hero weāre rooting for. Though her talent as a singer-songwriter ā the songs are written by Buckley and screenwriter Nicole Taylor ā are more than enough to think she deserves her shot at Nashville.
Throughout the movie, Rose tries and fails to be a better mother and member of society. Even when people go out of their way to help her she seems to make the wrong decision. Itās that grounded reality that makes Wild Rose unlike many movies with a similar story. Come for the story, stay for the music. āGlasgowā ā co-written by actor Mary Steenbergen ā is the best song from a movie from last year.

One trailer you should watchFirst Cow
From A24: āA loner and skilled cook (John Magaro) has traveled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) also seeking his fortune; soon the two collaborate on a successful business, although its longevity is reliant upon the clandestine participation of a nearby wealthy landownerās prized milking cow.ā
My take: Kelly Reichardtās last movie, Certain Women, was near my top ten for 2016 and has grown on me even more since then. Sheās so grounded in her approach but adds flashes of humor and flair to everything she does. This is one of my most anticipated of the year.
